Have you ever pondered how your choices, no matter how small, could leave a positive mark on our world? Well, at Avalon, we're all about those intentional decisions. We're firm believers that every dollar spent can be a force for good when it aligns with your values. In this blog, we're diving into the profound world of permaculture investments, and trust me, it's about so much more than just finances. It's about nurturing a world that mirrors your ideals. So, buckle up; this is going to be a journey.
Now, when you hear permaculture, you might conjure up images of lush organic farms and bountiful harvests. While these aspects are undeniably vital, permaculture is more than just growing your veggies. It's a holistic way of life that seeks to establish self-sustaining ecosystems and communities working hand in hand with nature, not against it.
Initially, we planned to convert an old camper into a versatile living space that could be easily packed up and stored when not in use. However, in January 2023, we had the privilege of connecting with Augustin, who runs Wim Ka, a Bribri business offering hikes in the primary rainforest. Augustin is deeply committed to promoting appreciation for indigenous culture and raising awareness about the importance of rainforest preservation. As a former representative of the Bribri council, he's a wealth of knowledge and connections in the area.
Our conversations with Augustin sparked our interest in the traditional Bribri way of building, and we became eager to incorporate it into the development of Avalon. But there was a catch—the cost of the materials was significantly higher than we had anticipated. After several discussions and trips to the indigenous reserve, it became evident why. While we often think of materials as boards, posts, and the like, which we purchase at fixed prices in hardware stores, these components hold a vastly different significance for the Bribri people.
Materials represent the trees, palms, and leaves that must be carefully selected, cut, and trimmed in the jungle. They are then transported by pure muscle power to the nearest accessible location for truck transport. Once delivered, they are painstakingly peeled, cut by hand, processed, and treated with traditional plant-derived products. In essence, materials equate to a tremendous amount of labor involving many people with diverse skills.
So, did we say yes to constructing a climate-neutral house with natural, regional materials? Absolutely. Did we embrace the chance to collaborate with the local community and preserve traditional knowledge? You bet. Were we ready to pay the right price, even if it stretched our budget? Without a doubt. This project embodies everything Avalon stands for.
Investing in Avalon's permaculture projects isn't about money; it's about investing in your vision of the future. Our next ventures involve creating a self-sustaining food forest on a former pasture, breathing life into the soil while producing organic goodness without excess water or chemicals. We're also diving into well and water management systems, rainwater harvesting, and an eco-friendly gray water system.
These projects are a partnership with the local community, where everyone has a seat at the table. Our mission is to gather, share, and spread knowledge on sustainable living and regenerative practices. By cultivating a thriving ecosystem in tune with nature, we aim to tackle some of our era's biggest challenges.
Permaculture isn't just a buzzword; it's a powerful tool for creating regenerative systems that benefit us and the planet. At Avalon, we're convinced that investing in permaculture isn't just wise; it's our ticket to a brighter future. By rallying behind our permaculture endeavors, you become an architect of this movement towards a sustainable, regenerative world. So, here's your invitation: join us on this thrilling journey towards a tomorrow we all dream of.
